Traveling to Niseko by train is a reliable and scenic option for independent travelers arriving through New Chitose Airport or Sapporo. The journey to Kutchan Station usually involves one transfer at Otaru Station and takes approximately 2 hours 45 minutes from New Chitose Airport.
Kutchan Station is the closest JR station to Ramat Niseko and nearby Hirafu accommodation areas. After arriving, guests will need to independently arrange transportation to the lodge by taxi or local bus.
Local trains in Hokkaido may have limited space for ski bags and winter equipment, especially during peak season, so travelers arriving with large luggage should allow additional transfer time.

Getting to Niseko from New Chitose Airport
New Chitose Airport (CTS) is the closest airport to Niseko and serves both domestic flights and direct international flights from major Asian cities and other overseas arrivals during the winter season.
After collecting luggage and exiting the airport terminal, the JR train station is located directly beneath the airport. Travelers can purchase tickets from ticket machines or staffed counters before boarding.
Airport ATMs and convenience stores are available inside the terminal before entering the station platforms.
Step 1 – Arrive at New Chitose Airport Station
After arriving at New Chitose Airport:
- Follow signs for JR Trains inside the airport terminal
- Proceed downstairs to the JR Station
- Buy tickets using ticket machines or ticket counters
- Reserved seating is strongly recommended during peak season
Travelers arriving earlier in the day will generally have more train options available before the final train departure to Kutchan.
Step 2 – Take the Rapid Airport Train to Otaru
Board the Rapid Airport Train from New Chitose Airport to Otaru Station.

Step 3 – Transfer at Otaru Station
Most train journeys to Niseko require changing trains at Otaru Station.

Travelers should check platform information carefully, as the connecting train may depart from the opposite platform or another nearby track.
During winter, trains can become crowded with ski equipment and large luggage.
Step 4 – Arrive at Kutchan Station
Kutchan Station is the closest JR station to Hirafu and the surrounding Niseko accommodation areas.
From Kutchan Station, travelers can continue to Ramat Niseko by:

- local bus
- Hirafu shuttle bus (winter evenings)
Most Niseko accommodation is located approximately 10–15 minutes from the station by road.
Traveling to Niseko from Tokyo
Travelers coming from central Tokyo can either fly to New Chitose Airport from Haneda Airport or Narita Airport, or continue north entirely by train.
Domestic flights from Tokyo airports to New Chitose Airport usually take around 1.5 hours and are commonly used by most international visitors arriving through Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and other international carriers.
For travelers preferring rail travel, the train journey from Tokyo to Niseko typically takes between 7 and 9 hours depending on transfer times and chosen routes.
Tickets can be purchased on the day of travel from JR stations throughout Japan.
Arriving at Kutchan Station
Once you arrive at Kutchan Station, transportation to Ramat Niseko must be arranged independently.

The local bus from Kutchan Station to Midtown Niseko costs ¥300 and can only be paid in cash.
The bus stop is located outside Kutchan Station.

- Enter through the rear door
- Take a numbered ticket from the machine near the entrance
- Ride the bus to Midtown Niseko
- Exit through the front door
- Insert your numbered ticket and ¥300 fare into the machine beside the driver

Hirafu Shuttle Bus – Downtown Line (5pm – 10:30pm)
During the winter season, the Hirafu Shuttle Downtown Line operates approximately every 45 minutes and is free to use.
The shuttle bus is red and displays a purple “Downtown Line” sign in the front window.
The bus stop is located outside Kutchan Station.
Ride the shuttle bus to Midtown Niseko.
From Midtown Niseko to Ramat Niseko
After arriving at Midtown Niseko:
